Large-Format Tile
Large-Format Tile: What to Know Before You Buy
Large-format tile — 12×24 and up — is one of the most popular looks we install, and for good reason. But it also demands more from the installation than smaller tile. Here's what to know.
Why people love it
Fewer grout lines mean a cleaner, more seamless look, rooms that feel bigger, and surfaces that are easier to keep clean. It's the go-to for modern floors, showers, and feature walls.
The catch: it needs a flat surface
Large tiles don't flex, so any dip or hump in the floor shows up as “lippage” — uneven edges you can feel underfoot. That's why proper prep matters: we level the substrate and use leveling systems during the install so the finished surface is flat and lippage-free.
Layout matters more, not less
With big tiles, every cut and grout line is prominent, so planning the layout around the room is key to a balanced result.
Done right, it's stunning
Large-format tile is worth it — as long as it's installed on a properly prepped surface by someone who does it regularly.
