Shower Waterproofing 101: Why It's the Most Important Part of Your Shower

Tile and grout are not waterproof
Water passes through grout and reaches the wall behind. Without a proper waterproofing layer, that moisture soaks into the substrate, leading to rot, mold, and eventually loose or falling tile. This is the #1 reason showers fail.
How it's done right
We build every custom shower on the Wedi waterproofing system — waterproof boards and membranes on the walls and pan, sealed seams and corners, and correctly sloped pans that drain fully. Benches, niches, and curbs get special attention because they're where leaks love to start.
We start by tearing everything out
A lot of the shower failures we're called to fix come from someone building new tile over old drywall, old tile, or old waterproofing to save time and materials. We don't. We completely remove the previous tile, replace the drywall, and redo the waterproofing from scratch, so every shower starts on a clean, level, sound surface. It's more work up front — but trying to save materials almost always ends up taking longer and costing more in the end.
Why it's worth it
Proper waterproofing and a full tear-out cost a little more up front and save you thousands in water damage down the road. It's the difference between a shower that lasts a couple of years and one that lasts decades.
